'In her music, you can detect influences ranging from the skittering female-centred rhythms of The Slits and The Raincoats; the bleak, bewitched emoting of Portishead's Beth Gibbons; the otherworldliness of Björk; the fire of Nina Simone, as well as more contemporary electronic sounds. There're some big names in that last sentence, and rightly, because you should expect big things from Mwen...' - Rich Morris (Soundblab.com) 'Interesting stuff...I can't imagine anyone right now who's making songs that sound like her...' - Scratcha DVA (Rinse FM) 'A talent, no doubt about that...' - Joe Muggs (Music Journalist / Blogger / Reviewer) |

Interview for The Blog of Wonder
Mary Anne Hobbs plays out 'Bones'The lady herself, the QUEEN of the tasteful airwaves, tastemaker extraordinaire MARY ANNE HOBBS played my track 'Bones' on her XFM show the other night. No jokes. Here's the clip: BBC Radio 1 Airplay & Forthcoming Release So as the above suggests would you believe I somehow cracked my way onto Radio 1 the other day! Rob da Bank played out my track 'Bones' on his Saturday morning show (12th November) and what an exciting day it was indeed. But wait, there's more! Not only did Rob play out my track he also rated it number 3 of his 'High Fives' - top 5 recommended tracks of the week. Not bad business for my first Radio 1 play. Giles Deacon London Fashion Week promoA track I wrote (which you've probably never heard) was used in a promo for Giles Deacon's show at London Fashion Week on Models.com. Good stuff if you ask me! Check it out on Models.com here if you don't believe me Giles S/S 2012 London Fashion Week from models.com on Vimeo. The track's called 'Beautiful Machines' FYI xx Thrice Live! (Yes i used the word thrice..) August is shaping up to be a bit of a big gig month! This is just a wee update to let you know about three gigs coming up super soon. Back up to Leeds for Unity Day & WARPAINT This weekend (Saturday 23rd of July) I'm back up in my old stomping groung Leeds to play at the Afterparty of the FANTASTIC Unity Day one day / all day festival. The one thing I've always loved about Leeds is its great community spirit and how well everyone selflessly pulls together. Unity Day is a great example of this. So if you're in the Yorkshire area (or not in fact) I advise you head over to Woodhouse Moor in Leeds for the family friendly music, arts, drama and culture day that is Unity Day. Then afterwards come catch me performing LIVE at Leeds University Union in Pulse where things will NOT be so family friendly... Got some new tunes to play too - one of which is this: ; I absolutely LOVE the band Warpaint - if you don't know them check them out to get your fill of that bluesy, punk, riot grrl vibe. Those ladies kick some serious behind. What better way to honour a band than the age old method of a cover. Mimicry is, afterall, one of the oldest forms of flattery I believe... x Share |
More Rinse FM airplayYes, as the title of this news update suggestes my music has been played on Rinse FM again. This time my track 'Swing Down Low' was played out - again on Scratcha's breakfast show. Here's the clip: Swing Down Low 22-06-11 Rinse FM GBMC by Mwen

Tune in to NTS Radio tonight at midnightNTS Radio is a brand new online radio station broadcasting out of Dalston in East London and generating quite a bit of buzz. Featuring shows from DJs like Dark Sky, Bullion, Alex Chase and monthly shows from Wire mag it's not difficult to understand why. Tune in to Lawson's show tonight (Wednesday 15th June) from midnight because I've just received word that one of my tracks has been added to his show's playlist. I love getting played on underground / independent / pirate radio stations 'cause they're always the ones playing the best and most diverse music! And the ones playing music I personally love so for this reason we should always support them in my book. Rinse FM airplaySo earlier this week (8th June) Rinse FM Dj Scratcha played out my track 'Sunstep' on his show Grimey Breakfast from my soundcloud page on recommendation from a lovely fan named Robb (thanks Robb!). Given that this track is a work in progress (and clearly marked as such!) I think it comes out relatively unscathed. Those of you that are regular listeners to Scratcha's show and know what he's like will recognise just how badly this could have turned out - Scratcha just ain't afraid to tear you down if he's not feeling you track. I get a free radio plug for my upcoming Vibe Bar gig too - I'll take that! Share |
'6 of the Best' at Vibe Bar and Polaroid 85After a successful week playing at two great venues in London and Leeds more great news has come my way. On the 22nd of June I have been invited to play the monthly Vibe Bar showcase of the best acts to have performed at Vibe Bar's weekly event 'Plugged in Switched on'. Some of you might remember that Vibe Bar was one of the first London venues I performed at as a solo artist so being invited to play this event is not a only a pleasure for me but a marker of how far I seem to have come in a relatively short time. Hope to see you there - it's FREE in and I think I'll be in celebration mode... BBC IntroducingIt appears the lovely fellas over at BBC6 Music will be playing my music on Tom Robinson's BBC Introducing show this month (December). How very exciting! That basically means national radio play - not bad for business! Be sure to keep listening to Tom Robinson's show this month on DAB or stream it online via the BBC6 Music website. Share |
Interview for Soundblab.comI recently did an interview with the lovely guys over at Soundblab.com. |
